Malabar Parakeet: A vibrant green parakeet, the male having a blue tail and red on the wings

White-cheeked Barbet: A common bird in the area, recognized by its green body and white facial markings

SIGHT SEEING HOTSPOTS
Coorg boasts of an abundance of natural beauty comprising of verdant coffee plantations and paddy fields, lush mountains, charming rivers, waterfalls and wild life sanctuaries. CAPTAIN K’s location allows its guests to visit all these sightseeing hotspots on short day trips.

ABBEY FALLS (45 minutes from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 30 kms from Madikeri, the River Cauvery cascades down a rock face into a calm pool to form the scenic Abbey Falls. A hanging bridge across the gorge and picnicking are favourite attractions here

IRUPPU FALLS (1 hour from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 50 kms from Madikeri, the River Cauvery - originating in the Brahmagiri Hills, descends into the magnificent Iruppu Falls which is believed to cleanse the souls of the thousands of devotees who visit it!

TALACAUVERY & BHAGAMANDALA (1 hour from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 40 kms from Madikeri, it is the confluence of the River Cauvery and its two tributaries (Kanake & Sujyoti) and boasts of a famous Kerala-style temple. The River Cauvery - considered to be one of the seven sacred rivers according to Hindu Scripture, originated in the Brahmagiri Hills at a place called Talacauvery (Head of the Cauvery) and is marked by a small spring.
Two temples, a shrine and a path leading to the nearby Brahmagiri peak are some of the attractions here

DUBARE ELEPHANT CAMP (45 minutes from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 35 kms from Madikeri, this is an elephant training camp run by the Forest Department. You can enjoy the sight of elephants bathing and feeding as well as take a short ride atop one of these magnificent creatures!

CAUVERY NISARGADHAMA (45 minutes from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 35 kms from Madikeri, it is an island connected by a rope bridge to the mainland. Picnicking, boating and elephant rides are the main attractions here

NAGARHOLE NATIONAL PARK (90 minutes from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 93 kms from Madikeri, it is a natural reserve for deer, elephants, panthers, tigers and a variety of birds. It also contains waterfalls, forests and streams

BRAHMAGIRI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY (1 hour from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 60 kms from Madikeri, this sanctuary is home to evergreen forests, grasslands and bamboo as well as tigers, leopards, lion-tailed macaques, sloth bears, emerald doves and black bulbuls among others

NAMDROLING MONASTERY & THE TIBETAN COLONY (45 minutes from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 35 kms from Madikeri, in Bylakuppe, is a Tibetan settlement established between 1961 and 1963 with a current population of approximately 60,000 Tibetan refugees. It consists of a number of monasteries, nunneries and the beautiful Golden Temple. The colony also has delicious Tibetan eateries and stalls selling products made by the local inhabitants

KABINI FISHING CAMP (45 minutes from CAPTAIN K’s):
About 35 kms from Madikeri, in Valanoor, it is one of the most scenic fishing spots and is located on the backwaters of the River Cauvery. Types of fish found here include Mahseer, Maral and Mapp

RAJA SEAT, THE FORT, OMKARESHWARA TEMPLE, GADDIGE TOMBS & THE GENERAL THIMMAIAH MEMORIAL
(20 minutes from CAPTAIN K’s):
In Madikeri, Raja Seat is where the Kodagu kings used to spend their evenings enjoying spectacular views and the sunset. It boasts of a variety of beautiful flowers as well as a musical fountain that offers a sound & light show on most evenings

In Madikeri, there is a late 19th century Fort surrounding a palace, built first by Mudduraja and later rebuilt in granite by Tippu Sultan. A British-style church is now a museum housing artifacts of Coorg history and offering a glimpse into its military, royal and cultural past
​
In Madikeri, the Omkareshwara Temple, built in 1820 by Lingarajendra, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the Shivaling here is among the five most sacred originating in Kashi. With its minarets and dome, the temple resembles a masjid. The large tank in the temple courtyard contains thousands of fish which obligingly come up to be fed!

In Madikeri, the Gaddige Tombs are important monuments housing the remains of Raja Virarajendra and Raja Lingarajendra. A beautiful view of Madikeri town can be seen from here
​
In Madikeri, the General Thimayya Memorial - which opened as recently as 2021, is a war museum paying homage to this illustrious Coorg warrior. It houses various antique weaponry, war relics, art and books on the Indian armed forces as well as a MIG-21 Fighter Jet and a Bofors Canon among other memorabilia

TREKKING DESTINATIONS
Coorg is a trekker’s paradise, and hiking or driving through this land offers the traveller enchanting, panoramic views of misty mountains, lush green valleys, wooded forests, verdant coffee plantations and undulating paddy fields.

All the above are between one to three hours drive from CAPTAIN K’s. However, trekking expeditions with an experienced local guide begin from Madikeri town which is 20 minutes away from our homestay.
